FAQ - Farm Fresh Eggs
-
Eggs are laid with a special coating on it called a bloom. Here at The Pink Hen, we wash all of our eggs so therefore they lose their protective coating. Washed eggs must be refrigerated and are fresh for up to two (2) months.
-
Yes, absolutely! But make sure to wait a few extra days to make sure they peel easily. Farm fresh eggs are not aged like the ones you’d find at the grocery store.
-
Fear not! This is a common occurance and simply means the hen has a healthy oviduct. You may scoop out the red bit or simply eat it like normal.
-
The float test is considered a myth to many because each egg is different. It depends on the size of the egg, yolk, air bubble inside and the thickness of the shell. Washed, farm fresh eggs are good in the refrigerator for up to two (2) months.
-
Unlike factory raised chicken breeds and much like us, heritage hens value quality over quantity. Not every hen lays an egg every day and there can be many reasons why she doesn’t. Rest assured no matter the color, all eggs are the same on the inside.
-
The chickens start their lives in the warmth and safety of the farmhouse, eventually to transition outside to the coop and are gradually integrated with the rest of the flock.
Every day, the hens are given fresh water and feed before they are free to roam the property in search of yummy, nutritous snacks. They find things like grass, berries and even small critters while taking the occasional dust bath. We believe happy hens lay the tastiest eggs!
We never use any antibiotics or hormones with our hens, so you can rest assured that your eggs are clean and sustainable.
